April completed her nursing education at San Jacinto College in 2004. She began her career in the Neurotrauma Intensive Care Unit at Memorial Hermann Hospital in the renowned Texas Medical Center. In this role she was able to provide critical care to those suffering from traumatic brain injuries, strokes, and neurosurgical-related conditions, to name a few.
In 2008, April pivoted, and utilized her critical thinking skills in a new capacity, this time as a high-risk obstetrical nurse at The Woman’s Hospital of Texas. While at Woman’s Hospital, April provided care to countless families. These mothers included standard “textbook” deliveries and advanced to the most complicated medical and obstetrical emergencies. This also included obtaining her inpatient obstetrical certification to continue to provide the most comprehensive and holistic care to her patient population.
While at Woman’s Hospital, April completed her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington and graduated Magna Cum Laude. This additional coursework exposed April to the community health needs and advanced healthcare in various areas of nursing.
After some exposure to the legal arena and delivering (what felt like) thousands of babies, April went back to school again. As a lifelong Sooner, April chose to obtain her Master of Legal Studies in Healthcare Law from The University of Oklahoma College of Law. This program provided a framework to federal healthcare programs, the Affordable Care Act, compliance and quality, anti-trust issues, and a focus on professional contracts and relationships. With a perfect GPA, April was also a member of the University of Oklahoma legal honor society and was honored by the Dean of the College of Law.
As much as April treasured her patient relationships, she ultimately made the choice to leave the bedside permanently in 2019.
As a Legal Nurse Consultant, April is able to utilize her nursing critical thinking skills in a new way. April is proficient in communication skills, clinical skills, writing skills, clinical documentation, education, and leadership. This includes experience in the reviewing of the complete medical record in an effort to assess potential areas of liability.
As a fierce advocate for nurses, April is also a member of the American Nurses Association (ANA), the Texas Nurses Association (TNA), and the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWONN). Outside of healthcare, April is also a member of the Daughter’s of the Republic of Texas as a direct descendant of the Old Three Hundred.
April is a wife and the mother of four children. She enjoys spending time with her large family.
